Drew Weissman and Hungarian scientist Katalin Karikó won the Nobel Prize in Medicine for their research that contributed to the development of COVID-19 vaccines. The 64-year-old American doctor recorded the moment his parents learned the exciting news.

In an emotional call, Weissman told his 90-year-old mother Adele and 91-year-old father Hal that he had won the prize. “I have some news,” he says, “I won the Nobel Prize.” You can hear the couple burst with joy and pride.

Weissman and Karikó were awarded the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their collaborative research that revolutionized vaccine development and scientists’ understanding of how messenger RNA (mRNA) interacts with the immune system. Their work enabled potent Covid vaccines to be produced in less than a year, preventing tens of millions of deaths and helping the world recover from the pandemic.
